Top Election Results: Recapping The 2022 California Primary

Here is what you need to know as the results trickle in from the 2022 Primary Election:

  • California Governor Gavin Newsom had an easy victory during the Primary Election. Early results show he received over 56% of the votes. He is facing Republican state lawmaker Brian Dahle in November. Dahle placed second in the running for California governor.
  • Jim Cooper is leading the Sacramento County Sheriff's race. Early results show that the Democratic Assemblymember is leading against County Undersheriff Jim Barnes by 13%. Cooper says his primary issue is working with local leaders to resolve homelessness.
  • Early results are showing that Thien Ho is ahead of his opponent Alana Mathews in the Sacramento County District Attorney race. Ho is currently the deputy district attorney and was a prosecutor for the Golden State Killer case. Mathews is a former deputy district attorney. The winner would replace Anne Marie Schubert, who ran for California Attorney General.
  • San Francisco residents voted in favor of recalling District Attorney Chesa Boudin. The 41-year-old, who has been in office since 2019 was part of a group of progressive prosecutors nationwide who pledged to hold police accountable and relax bail laws. City residents watched as crime numbers soared during the pandemic and attacks against mostly older Asian Americans took place. Many blamed Boudin's policies for the problems. A movement to recall Boudin began earlier this year. Last night, the recall measure known as Proposition H had the support of nearly 60% of voters, with 40% voting against it.
  • The Mayor's race in Los Angeles between Karen Bass and Rick Caruso will head to a November runoff election since neither candidate received more than 50% of the vote. Neither candidate was able to reach the 50-percent threshold to win City Hall outright in a special election last night. Incumbent Mayor Eric Garcetti cannot run again due to term limits. Caruso, a Republican who switched parties to run as a Democrat, says he can fix the crime problem in the city and get the homeless off the streets. Congresswoman Bass, who was rumored to be on Joe Biden's short list for Vice President in 2020, would become the first woman and African American to lead the city if she wins.
  • Democrat Alex Padilla and Republican Mark Meuser both advanced and will square off in the general election for U.S. Senate.
  • Republican Connie Conway will serve the remainder of the term vacated by former congressman Devin Nunes. Voters in the Central Valley congressional district selected Conway over Democrat Lourin Hubbard to fill what amounts to a six month term. The district will disappear when new congressional maps take effect next year. Conway served as the Republican leader in the state assembly until November 2014. Nunes resigned in January to take a job leading former President Donald Trump's social media company.
