Sheriff Jones Announces Run For Congress In California's New 3rd District

The Sacramento County Sheriff is detailing what he is planning to do after his term of Sheriff is over. Sheriff Scott Jones announced last October that he will not seek re-election for his role as Sheriff, instead he is now announcing a run for Congress. Jones took to social media on Monday morning to announce his run for the newly re-drawn 3rd Congressional District as a Republican. That new district includes parts of Plumas, Sierra, Nevada, Placer, Yuba, Sacramento, El Dorado, Mono and Inyo Counties.

"After much contemplation, speaking with folks, and at the urging of my family, I’m proud to announce that I’ve filed to run for California's 3rd Congressional District." Jones wrote in the first announcement on his Twitter page. He says he is looking to "stand up against the defund the police movement" and "secure our border". Jones was elected Sheriff in 2010 and was re-elected again in 2014 after running unopposed. He is a 33-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff and has held many positions over that time, including security, corrections, patrol, and legal affairs. Republican Assemblyman Kevin Kiley has also announced a run for the same district. Currently, California's 3rd Congressional District covers most of the Sacramento Valley, all of Colusa, Sutter and Yuba Counties and parts of Glann, Lake, Solano and Yolo Counties. That district has represented by Democratic Congressman John Garamendi since 2013.
