Security Guard Shot While Protecting Reporter Covering Retail Theft

KRON 4 is reporting on Wednesday that a security guard was shot while assigned to one of their reporters working on assignment regarding recent smash and grab thefts. Reports say this unfolded during an attempted robbery of the news camera when the suspect fired at the guard. Details of the altercation before the shot was fired have not been made clear yet, a press conference is expected in the coming hours following the shooting. The KRON 4 crew was on the 300 block of 14th Street in Oakland when the shots were fired around 12:20pm. The guard is in surgery and being treated at Highland Hospital. The KRON reporter was not injured and has not been identified; no word yet if the suspect got away with the camera equipment.
