Natomas Hotel Slated For New Homeless Shelter Aimed At Housing Families

A hotel in Natomas is slated to become the regions next homeless shelter as part of the Sacramento City's Vista Nueva project. The council has submitted an application for $35 million in funding for the project. The hefty price tag will go towards buying the property and renovating it to make suitable for up to 300 people. The City Council also approved $9 million for the project from its American Rescue Plan stimulus funding and its federal Community Development Block Grant funds. The 110 room Staybridge Suites hotels will make 100 rooms permanent housing and 10 rooms will act as an emergency shelter. Those living in the property will have access to the social services and are centrally located in the city of Natomas. This acquisition will mark the city's first shelter intended to serve families. The $35 million is coming from the Federally funded Homekey project and is still waiting to secure state approval, which the city is confident will come by the end of the year. Mayor Pro Tem Angelique Ashby says people could start moving in as early as March.
