Plans are being made for the former site of the Junipero Serra statue in Sacramento's Capitol Park. A new law written by Assemblyman James Ramos will replace the statue with a monument honoring Sacramento-area tribes. The Serra statue was taken down last summer amid protests and reignited discussion surrounding historical figures and their question pasts in relation to native tribes and slavery. Governor Newsom last week signed six tribal bills introduced by Ramos. They aim to provide aid for tribal foster youth, create the new monument honoring Sacramento-area tribes, bolster students' right to wear tribal regalia at graduation ceremonies, allow a paid holiday for state court personnel on California Native American Day and streamline access to emergency response vehicles on tribal lands. Ramos says the process of ideas for the monument is left strictly to six Indian tribes that call the area home. Those six tribes get to ultimately decide what the replacement statue will look like, however, the look of the final monument has not been presented at this time.
