Homeless Camp Fire Damages Two Bridges In Sacramento, Displacing Dozens

Drivers along Interstate 80 could see plumes of smoke and flames coming up from underneath bridges along Roseville Road in Sacramento after a homeless camp caught fire. The Sacramento Fire Department says the fire started underneath bridges that supports Regional Transit's light rail tracks just after 12:45 am Wednesday morning. The small but destructive blaze burned motorhomes, dozens of cars and a few trailers of a homeless camp about a quarter of an acre in size, damaging the underpass. Light rail service was suspended for a period of time in order for engineers to inspect the track. They deemed the tracks safe for the morning commute but will need more assessment for the long term use. Firefighters said one person took themselves to the hospital, but they fire crews did not know how badly they were injured. Campers told KCRA 3 that about 40 homeless people lost the only place they call home, now with nowhere to go.
