Elk Grove Police Officer Who Pulled Man From Burning Car Just Doing His Job

An Elk Grove policeman says he was just doing what he's been trained to do on the night February 11th, but he's being called a hero after pulling a man out of a burning car.

Officer Jarred Houston was responding to a call about crash, when he spotted flames coming from the car along the side of Waterman Road. Concerned that someone might inside he jumped out of his patrol car and rushed to help. Dramatic bodycam video shows Houston talking to the driver and getting him to slide over the passenger seat, so the officer can shatter a side window as the flames spread from the engine to rest of the car, then he can be seen pulling the man through the window to safety.

Houston's heroic act is all the more significant, when you consider that he's not at all comfortable around fire.

"A car on fire is not my favorite call to go to. I'm not a huge fan of fire," Houston told KTXL TV. "So getting him out of there and making sure he wasn't seriously injured and if he needed more help that, hopefully, I could give that to him."
