California Might Put Limits On 'Flushable' Wipes To Stop Clogged Sewers

Critics claim those single-use wet tissues for people who are looking for something more than just toilet paper can clog sewers and cause costly repairs. Some environmentalists also worry the wipes end up in our waterways. Those are two reasons behind new legislation at the state Capitol in California which would require products to be clearly if they in fact cannot be flushed down the toilet.

Cities like New York and the District of Columbia have also tried curb the practice sending what manufactures call "flushable wipes" down the toilet. The California proposal has been watered down thanks to pressure from industry lobbyists who deny claims that the products damage pipes.

The author the legislation, Democratic Assemblyman Richard Bloom of Santa Monica, hopes to find a compromise with manufacturers.
