Oklahoma Governor Retaliates, Bans State Travel To California

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has issued an executive order banning most state-funded travel to California in retaliation for a similar ban California placed on travel to his state.

California lawmakers decided in 2018 to halt state-funded travel to the Sooner State in response to a measure approved by the Oklahoma Legislature that allows adoption agencies to deny placement services to same-sex parents. In addition, San Francisco in 2019 banned travel by city employees to states with restrictive abortion laws, and that includes Oklahoma.

Stitt, who is a first-term Republican, said he is standing up for Oklahoma's pro-life stance. "Enough is enough," the Governor said, but he also noted there are exceptions to his ban, including business recruiting trip and college sports.

"If California’s elected officials don't want public employees traveling to Oklahoma, I am eager to return the gesture," Stitt said.
