Newsom Calls For Meeting To Jump Start PG&E Post-Bankruptcy Fix

California Governor Gavin Newsom wants to speed up the bankruptcy process for Pacific Gas & Electric, so the company can be restructured to operate more effectively before the start of next year's wildfire season.

Newsom held a news conference at the Capitol on Friday, during which he said he has called for a meeting of PG&E executives, shareholders and creditors, and wildfire victims next week to accelerate what Newsom called "a consensual resolution" to the utility's bankruptcy case.

Shareholders and creditors are trying to stake their claim in court for control of PG&E and have submitted their own plans for what the utility will look like after emerging from bankruptcy.

PG&E filed for bankruptcy earlier this year after a 2018 wildfire mostly destroyed the town of Paradise and killed 85 people.

The utility is facing up to $30 billion in potential damages from other recent fires that were started by its equipment.
