California's Governor Wants State Regulators To Investigate Power Shutoffs

Governor Gavin Newsom is calling for a major investigation by the California Public Utilities Commission into the recent power shutoffs by major utilities in the state.

"I want to see the CPUC launch a total reform of power shutoff rules and regulations. Utilities must be held accountable and be aggressively penalized for their over reliance on PSPS, and the product of this investigation must be new rules and regulations to do that," said Newsom. "I also want to see customers not charged for PSPS. It seems obvious, but under the current rules, utilities can do just that. It's unacceptable and must be remedied."

Newsom last week sent a letter to the top brass of the three major investor-owned utilities in California asking them to adhere to previously-agreed protocols for the shutoffs, and to work with state and local officials to lessen the impact the shutoffs have on the public. The Governor also sent another letter to PG&E CEO William Johnson demanding the company do more to not only inform customers of pending interruptions in power but also provide those who lose power with an automatic credit or rebate of $100 to $200 as compensation. Johnson rejected that idea.

PG&E on Monday issued a report to the CPUC in which the admit that the utility's power lines may have started two wildfires over the weekend in the San Francisco area. The fires sparked near the town of Lafayette. PG&E told the CPUC that a worker on the scene of the first fire was told by firefighters that it may have started after power line made contact with a communication line.

Newsom also announced the launch of a new state website with tools and resources for Californians who have been impacted by wildfires and utility-directed power shutoffs.
