Bay Area Shakes With 4.5 Quake

Nerves were a little rattled on Monday night, as the San Francisco Bay Area widely felt a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. The moderate quake began about 10:30 p.m. and the shaking was felt in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose.

Keith Knudsen, USGS geologist and deputy director of the agency's Earthquake Science Center, told the Los Angeles Times that the earthquake had a preliminary depth of about 9 miles below the surface, and he notes that's fairly deep for quakes in this region.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the epicenter the Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek areas. Scientists were not immediately expecting any major structural damage to be reported.

Emergency responders say they received no reports of injuries or property damage connected with shaking.
