State Officials Force School Desegregation In Sausalito

A school district in one of California's most affluent counties will desegregate a struggling school that state officials have said was created specifically for low-income minority kids.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Friday that the Sausalito Marin City School District in the North Bay will now have to create a plan, scholarship program, and counseling for students of Bayside Martin Luther King Jr. Academy as part of an agreement recently finalized.

The school serves children from kindergarten age through eighth grade. It was established in 2013 for students who live in Marin City. That community has a large African American population. Becerra alleges district officials withheld resources for the school in order to benefit a charter school that has a student body that is mostly white.

Becerra calls it the first comprehensive effort to desegregate a California school in five decades.
