Authorities are planning to arrest thousands of illegal immigrants this Sunday, following through on previously delayed raids in ten U.S. cities. In late June, President Trump put the scheduled raids on hold, something that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California had requested.
Agents are expected to make the arrests in what are known as "sanctuary cities," such as New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, in which local authorities refuse to enforce federal immigration statutes.
Talking with reporters at the Capitol today, Pelosi said the raids will terrorize migrant children and tear families apart.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is defending the raids. Talking with reporters at the Capitol Thursday, McCarthy said the raids are targeting undocumented immigrants who have already been slated for deportation.
