A service dog has died after it was shot while riding in a car on an Oakland freeway on Friday.

Police got calls about a shooting on Interstate 980 near the Interstate 580 intersection at 7:34 p.m. on Friday night.

Layla, a 4-year-old shepherd-pharaoh-hound mix, was riding in a silver Hyuandi Sonata when she was hit in the shoulder. The driver, a friend of her owner's, was also injured.

Nenita Kiser, Layla's owner, made the decision to put the dog down on Sunday as her chances of recovering weren't great.

A GoFundMe campaign set up to help pay for Layla's vet bills has raised $3,736 of its $5,500 goal.

Police are still investigating the case and are looking for suspects. Anyone with information on the shooting is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol.
