A man in his 40s died after falling nearly 2,000 feet off of an iconic cliff in Norway. Nina Thommesen, police attorney for the Sør-Vest politidistrikt, told CNN it appeared to be an accident, with witnesses telling investigators that the man slipped and fell off the cliff.

"The police are investigating the case as a fall accident," Thommesen said. "We have no assumptions that anything criminal has happened."

Authorities have not released the man's identity but said they recovered his phone and identification.

The accident occurred at Preikestolen, known as Pulpit Rock in English. It is one of Norway's most popular tourist destinations, with more than 300,000 people a year making the four-hour hike to the cliff, which offers expansive and breathtaking views of the Lysefjord.

The iconic cliff was featured in the 2018 film Mission: Impossible – Fallout in a scene featuring Tom Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, battling arms dealer August Walker, played by Henry Cavill. Ahead of the movie's premiere, around 2,000 people made the 2.4-mile hike to watch the flim on a giant inflatable screen near the edge of the cliff.
