President Trump is expected to announce what he calls a "very dramatic" plan for the border today. In addition to that, the Trump administration says it's putting a five percent tariff on goods coming in from Mexico in response to the number of illegal immigrants crossing into the U.S.
The tariff is effective June 10. The president says the percentage will increase "until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied." The sanctions will go up to ten-percent on July 1st and will go up five-percent each month after. by October, they'll be at 25-percent, where they'll remain until Mexico moves to stem the flow of illegal immigrants.
Mexican President Obrador responded in a public letter, saying that, quote, "social problems are not solved with duties or coercive measures." He said he was sending his foreign relations secretary to Washington today to try to negotiate a solution.
And, there's speculation that President Trump is considering some sweeping restrictions to be placed on those seeking asylum. His plan would essentially block Central American migrants from entering the U.S. according to reports.
A draft proposal circulating among Homeland Security advisers lays out plans that would prohibit migrants from seeking asylum if they have resided in a country other than their own before coming to the U.S. If it goes through it would effectively deny asylum to thousands of migrants waiting just south of the border.
