Split CA Initiative Dropped From Ballot

The California Supreme Court ruled that an initiative to split California into three states cannot appear on the ballot in November.

The CA Supreme Court stated in the decision, "significant questions have been raised regarding the proposition's validity."

Joe Getty talks about the CA Supreme Court's decision, and why in this instance--he supports the initiative process--barely.

Proposition 9 would've asked voters whether California should separate into three states: California, Northern California and Southern California, subject to approval by Congress

The long-shot initiative had gained enough signatures to qualify for the ballot

The proposal is backed by venture capitalist Tim Draper, who contends that splitting California up would allow regional communities to make better and more sensible decisions for their citizens.
