CHINESE LAWMAKERS ELIMINATE TERM LIMITS

China's rubber-stamp legislature eliminated presidential term limits on Sunday hat had existed for more than 35 years, opening up the possibility that President Xi Jinping may hold the office for life.

The term limits had been put in place under former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in 1982 to prevent a return to the excesses of a lifelong dictatorship.

The change is seen as the culmination of Xi’s efforts since being appointed leader of the party in 2012 to concentrate power in his hands.
