Sacramento Woman Denied Stimulus Check Because IRS Claims She's Dead

A Sacramento woman was denied her stimulus check and hasn't been able to file her taxes because the IRS says she's dead.

Tiffany Ruvalcaba told CBS13 that when she filed her 2018 taxes, the IRS said they were "unable to process" her tax return because "the taxpayer... was deceased."

"I am very much alive," said Ruvalcaba in an interview with CBS13.

She hasn't been able to file her taxes for the last two years.

"It's really creepy that I've had to talk about my death for so long," she said.

In 2018 she was able to go to the Social Security office and get that year's tax return but when it came time to file again in 2019, she encountered the same problem.

She was blocked from filing again in 2020 even though she's sent proof that Social Security has not deemed her dead.

"They were rejected," said Ruvalcaba. "Everyone assures me it's been corrected, and yet every time we file, it comes back again."

She says the IRS owes her $15,000 between the two refunds and stimulus money.

“IRS says it’s Social Security’s fault, Social Security says its IRS’s fault. I don’t care who’s at fault anymore. I really don’t. I just want to fix it,” said Ruvalcaba.

"I'm really curious how I died," she said. "What is the cause of death on my death certificate, you know?"
