Could California Be Moving Away From Gas-Powered Appliances?

The California Energy Commission is proposing a new code that would transition homes away from gas-powered appliances, reports the Associated Press.

The commission released a draft of a building standards code on Thursday, May 8. The code would require new homes to have circuits and panels that support all-electric appliances for heating, cooking, and drying clothes, reports AP.

The updated code would be adopted in August and would go into effect on January 1, 2023.

The code doesn't outright prohibit gas-powered appliances but the commission hopes it will encourage builders to construct all-electric structures.

"We're encouraging the technologies of the future," energy commissioner Andrew McAllister told AP.

The code is part of the commission's effort to eliminate fossil fuels from buildings. According to AP, they are responsible for around one-quarter of California's annual greenhouse gas emissions.
