Closing Arguments Begin Today In Chauvin Trial

The case of former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin is expected to be in the hands of jurors today.

Closing arguments are set for first thing this morning. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted of second-degree murder. He's also charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in last year's death of George Floyd. The city is preparing for a verdict with 3,000 National Guard troops and 1,100 officers in the state. U.S. Representative Maxine Waters joined demonstrators in Minnesota over the weekend as they gathered to protest the police killing of Daunte Wright, and commented how she hopes for the guilty verdict.

The trial concludes this week in the midst of widespread civil protests and unrest following nationally trending deaths of Daunte Wright and Alex Toledo - both killed by police officers earlier this month. A jury decision is set to come later in the week for the trial, and many cities are preparing for public reactions to the verdict.
