Sac Ordinance Requires Laid Off Workers Be Rehired

A proposed ordinance in Sacramento is moving to the full council after passing committee, but with a minor adjustment.

The Law and Legislation Committee voted 2 to 1 this week, passing a measure that would require companies in certain sectors with 50 or more workers to rehire employees laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic rather than taking on new ones. The ordinance initially covered all businesses falling within the parameters, but now it will focus on hospitality workers, event staff and commercial property employees. Reportedly from the U.S. Labor Department, California workers filed 145,400 initial claims for unemployment during the week that ended April 3, an increase of 39,000 from the prior week.

The ordinance is heading to the Sacramento City Council soon for a full review and vote.
