Two top medical executives with the California Medical Association were among more than a dozen people to have attended a birthday celebration in Napa County last week. A spokesperson for the organization says chief executive officer Dustin Corcoran and senior vice president Janus Norman joined Governor Gavin Newsom during the dinner at the upscale wine country restaurant French Laundry.
The California Medical Association represents 50,000 doctors in California and has been supportive of measures by public health officials to curb the spread of coronavirus.
Newsom apologized on Monday for attending the dinner by saying he made "a bad mistake." The news comes as many California counties face tougher restrictions to reopen with cases continuing to spike across the state.
