Sacramento Police Shoot, Kill Man Suspected Of Trying To Murder Officer

The Sacramento Police Department's Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Division are now investigating after Sacramento police officers shot and killed a suspect at the end of a standoff Tuesday night in the Northgate area. Police say the shooting happened in the 500 block of Wisconsin Avenue following an hours-long standoff at a home in the area.

The suspect was only described as a white male in his 50s who had reportedly opened fire on a Sacramento police officer the day before and was wanted for attempted murder.

Officers in the area conducting an investigation into the earlier shooting learned the suspect was inside a home in the area along with several other people. Police negotiators were eventually able to get everyone but the suspect out of the house.

After the negotiators nearly one more hour trying to talk him into surrendering, the suspect was spotted leaving the house through a backdoor. Officers say he had a semi-automatic style handgun with him as he tried to hop a fence. That's when he was shot and killed.

The Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office are providing oversight by monitoring the investigation.

The shooting also is covered by the City of Sacramento's policy on Police Use of Force as well as California law, so the police body and dash camera video and audio will have to be released to the public within 30 days.

On Wednesday a picture of the gun the suspect allegedly was carrying was released.
