Shoot-Out Leaves Sac County Sheriff's Deputy Critically Hurt, Suspect Dead

A Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy was taken to a hospital in “critical condition” Saturday night following a shoot-out with man who is also believed to have killed a woman at a Rancho Cordova home. That man died when shot later by deputies.

The shootings happened just after 7:00 p.m. on Dutchess Way between Mills Station Road and Highway 50 in Rancho Cordova, according to Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Tess Deterding. She said deputies responded to a call for help from a woman who said her 29-year-old grandson, against whom she had received a restraining order, had broken into her home and pointed a gun at her.

Deputies said that when they arrived in the neighborhood a few minutes later, they spotted a man who fit the suspect description. When they approached him, he ran away, Deterding said. It was at some point during a subsequent chase that he opened fire on them, striking one deputy as many a two times, she added. The suspect was reportedly killed in the resulting exchange of gunfire.

Other deputies who went into the home at about the same time as the chase are said to have found a woman apparently dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Deterding wasn’t certain if the dead woman was the grandmother who had made the 9-1-1 call or someone else who had also been in the home at the time.

The injured deputy underwent surgery on Saturday night, according to Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones. There was no immediate word on his condition.

The name of the injured deputy and the names of the other people involved were not available on Saturday night.
