Sacramento City Council Lifts Curfew, Relieves National Guard

The Sacramento City Council, under Mayor Darrell Steinberg's recommendation, have voted to lift the citywide curfew.

This would dismiss the National Guard and go into effect immediately.

After nearly a week of peaceful protests, including one that reached Steinberg's neighborhood Friday night, the Mayor was compelled to bring the vote forward.

“Last night’s peaceful and powerful demonstrations give me confidence that these steps, which we took reluctantly, are no longer necessary,” Steinberg said in a release.

Thursday, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California sent a letter to the Mayor wanting the curfew be lifted within 24 hours, saying that it was in violation of the First Amendment.
