California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Wednesday during his COVID-19 pandemic response briefing that he has signed an executive order beefing up the state's unemployment system to meet increased demand. The Governor announced that 1,340 state employees will have been reassigned to the Employment Development Department beginning next Monday. He also said the call center for unemployment claims will be staffed seven days per week from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Governor Newsom also said the government will provide over $75-million in financial support for undocumented migrants living in the state. Newsom says philanthropic partners have committed to raising an additional $50-million. This statewide public-private partnership is aimed to help individuals and families living in the country illegally but by law who are ineligible for unemployment insurance benefits, and disaster relief, including the CARES Act. Newsom said every Californian, including our undocumented neighbors and friends, should know that California is here to support them during this crisis.
