Sac Sheriff Ordered To Release Some Jail Inmates To Slow Coronavirus Spread

In response to the growing concern about COVID-19 the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office has been ordered to release of jail inmates who have 60-days or less remaining on their sentence, so long as they meet certain conditions. The releases have to take place on or before March 30, 2020.

According to information released by the Department, the Sacramento County Superior Court order does not include any inmate whose offense includes one or more of the following categories is eligible for release:

  • No inmate serving time for a domestic violence or offense involving a victim of domestic violence
  • No inmate serving time for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • No inmate serving time for an offense that requires registration as a sex offender

The order will result in the release of 421 inmates being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail in downtown Sacramento or the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center, according to the Department.
