District Four Sacramento City Councilmember Steve Hansen seemingly conceded the 2020 election to his opponent on Tuesday evening. After apparently seeing the latest election results from Sacramento County, a post appeared on Hansen's Twitter account suggesting Katie Valenzuela could not be overtaken, even with about 7,000 votes still to be counted.
"(It) seems like we will come up short in this race after an unprecedented negative campaign against me by my opponent and her allies," reads the tweet. Hansen had claimed just prior to Super Tuesday that Valenzuela and her supporters attempted to sway voters with homophobic door hangers left at businesses and homes in the district-- Hansen is the first openly gay member of the Sacramento City Council. Valenzuela denied the accusation.
"While this moment is a tough one for so many of us who believe in responsive and responsible leadership, we must press on and continue giving back for the sake of our city, fight for the best future for our kids, and foster a resilient city government to meet the needs and aspirations of our people," the tweet continues.
Hansen reportedly promises his followers that he won't be going away and will continue to work on their behalf, even after leaving office.
Valenzuela had not publicly commented on the tweet at the time this blog was posted.
