The nation's favorite post-apocalyptic zombie series, The Walking Dead, is returning this week. Since the majority of filming for the series takes place in and around Atlanta, it's really easy to get out and see these locations. We're gonna take you to the set and show you where some of the most iconic scenes were filmed.

Rick's Horse Ride Into Downtown Atlanta
In the first episode of The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes, a cop in rural Georgia, woke up in the hospital to discover the world had been taken over by zombies. After meeting some people nearby, he decided to travel to Atlanta where there was a supposed safe place.
During his ride into Atlanta he traveled down the interstate towards the city. This scene was filmed from the Jackson Street Bridge looking towards the Atlanta skyline.
CDC
After arriving into Atlanta, Rick met up with a group of people that were traveling to the CDC in search of a cure for the Walkers. The outside of the CDC building is actually the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
Prison/Sanctuary Set
During season 3, Raleigh Studios in Senoia, GA was the home of the Prison, where our survivors lived during the Woodbury era. Later in the series, Rick Grimes and crew abandoned the Prison and left Atlanta all together went north towards Washington, DC. The group found a new enemy called the Saviors lead by Negan. The Saviors lived in the Sanctuary. AMC converted the prison set into the Sanctuary, first seen in seen in Season 7.
The Raleigh Studio was purchased by AMC in July 2017.
Woodbury
Downtown Senoia is home to the little fictional town of Woodbury, home to the Governor. Woodbury was also featured in season 3 of the show. During filming the storefronts in the downtown area were boarded up and customers had to enter the stores from the back.
Alexandria Safe Zone
Right near Downtown Senoia, you can find the Alexandria Safe Zone. Complete with barriers to keep the dead out. In the series, Rick Grimes and crew leaves Atlanta and finds themselves in Alexandria, VA. Alexandria first appeared in season 5 and is the current home of the crew.

The Hilltop Colony
Hilltop is a fictional settlement located about 20 miles from the Alexandria Safe Zone. The set was built near the Raleigh Studios features a large mansion, known as Barrington House. A large wall built around the mansion protects the settlement from the walkers.
