New Health Care Data Exchange Could Lead to Better Patient Care

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield are health care rivals. But now, the two giants are coming together.

The insurers are investing $80 million into a new nonprofit data exchange nicknamed Cal Index.

It's expected that upward of 9 million patient records from members will go live by November, and the hope is that they'll be shared by doctors and hospitals in real time.

For instance, an emergency room can pull up information after a car accident and review existing conditions or medications.

Success will depend on just how many providers participate.

So far, the exchange says about 30 providers have expressed interest or will be signing up.
